Ramadan

Ramadan

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan began in mid-June, and lasts until about 17th July. The exact timing of Ramadan depends on the sightings of the moon and this differs from country to country. During Ramadan, Muslims refrain from a number of activities, mainly eating, drinking and smoking, between sunrise and sunset. What should be remembered is that Islam is not just constrained to the Middle East but rather worldwide in regions such as Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.  

During Ramadan, two main meals are served. One before dawn (known as suhoor) and the other after sunset (known as iftar). Suhoor is intended to last one throughout the day so a more substantial, heavier meal is eaten. Many Muslims break their fast by eating dates at the beginning of the iftar meal and can choose to continue eating and drinking throughout the night. At both meals, common foods that are consumed contain fresh fruit, vegetables, halal meats, breads and sweets, however the types of food vary by region. These meals are commonly served at home to be eaten together with the family, or in the local community mosques with other followers.

Traditionally, Ramadan begins with a new moon sighting, which marks the start of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. Ramadan began on June 18 and will continue for an entire month, leading to the festival of Eid al-Fitr which celebrates the 'Breaking of the Fast' for three consecutive days. Though traditions for this festival vary from country to country, what is common is that food is central to the celebrations in the form of family feasts. Sweets are very popular in the areas of the Middle East, whereas in Egypt fish is the main dish to be served. Lamb is also the popular dish in Iraq and Indonesia, whereas Beef is very popular in Malaysia.

Make sure that each of your meals include complex carbohydrates such as rice, legumes and potatoes which are absorbed slowly in your body, ensuring you have a stable level of glucose in your blood stream.
