Buddha's Birthday 2014

Buddha's Birthday 2014

Buddha's birthday, known as Vesak Day, is celebrated on various dates throughout the world, usually during the first full moon in May. Buddhists have been celebrating the auspicious day with appreciation for the past thousand years.

Buddhists celebrate Buddha's three most important life stage on Vesak: Birth, Enlightenment and Death, which traditionally are said to all have happened on the same day of the calendar throughout his life.  Buddha's birthday is a time for hanging lanterns and enjoying communal meals. Joyous parades of musicians, dancers, floats, and dragons are common features of the festivities through Asia.

During the celebration of Buddha's birthday there will naturally be an abundance of great food, predominantly the food eaten is vegetarian, although it can vary between communities. Traditional foods eaten among Buddhists include Lo Han Jai, a vegetarian stew that is sometimes referred to as Buddha's delight. This dish is prepared with a variety of vegetables, but the ingredients vary regionally. Another common dish eaten is the Buddhist monk soup which is prepared with pumpkins, beans, noodles and sweet potato.
